Academic Development

Exceptional teaching is a pre-requisite for exceptional results

At a time when numbers taking both GCSE and A level music are shrinking nationally, and when the skills of musical learning are being less and less securely established in the early stages of education, the challenge of helping pupils reach their full musical potential has never been harder. Navigating a successful path through the mark schemes, examiner reports, specification requirements and the myriad of often conflicting exam board guidance can be a daunting task.

I can help your music department find strategies to maximise performance at all levels. I would be able to assist your department in addressing improvement of examined grades in any of the units at either or both GCASE and A levels, providing insight and assistance into the marking process, working on suitably designed schemes of work and teaching stratgies, and helping build attainment levels in the pupils.

At the risk of sounding immodest, I  have a strong track record of exceptional academic achievement as a teacher, and In 20 years of running a department, my A level results (in a non specialist school) averaged an 80% A*/A rate, and an A* rate of 40%. My GCSE track record is similarly strong, and at that level I have the singular achievement of never having had coursework marks for either performing or composing changed at moderation in 25 years of teaching. I am now significantly involved at a senior level in both GCSE and A level examining and have a substantial insight into what specification compliance looks like, and how it can help you to lead pupils to success in their exams.
