Musical Performance Development

The best performers at school understand the importance of balancing perfection with pragmatism

Most young people discover music through the medium of performing. Their love of the subject often stems from their personal engagement in making music. However, at GCSE and A level the online forums are full of teachers concerned that the results achieved do not match their assessment of their pupils' ability. With my experience as an examiner and leader, I can help music teachers understand the marking criteria and what it is examiners look for. I can provide insights into why success in ABRSM graded exams is not necessarily likely to lead to success at A level and GCSE. I can help with improvements in music exam results and I can assist you to ensure that the outcomes match the enthusiasm of the pupils.

With my insights and support, your pupils and peripatetic music team will maximise their chances of the best marks.

Beyond examined music, I can also help with strategies and techniques for running successful and enjoyable ensembles, balancing the development of ensemble and other musical skills with ensuring a continued love of playing.

Whether it is improving ABRSM or other individual music exam results, the performing units of GCSE and A level, or the music-making of a school's ensembles, I have a wealth of experience to help you achieve the best outcomes. In my final year running a department, 9 pupils in year 13 achieved an ARSM diploma, most with distinction; a further 12 achieved Grade 8 with either merit or distinction. Almost all pupils achieved full marks in the performing units at GCSE or A Level. My experiences ensure that I can provide insight and strategies to improve all aspects of performing, whether examined, solo or ensemble. Conducting and rehearsing tutoring is another facet of this.
